SUMMARY:ICFO | ANITA MAHADEVAN-JANSEN
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Currently about 10:1 women and 3:1 men have some form of thyroi
d disorder\, which when not controlled by medications\, is treated with th
yroid surgeries that is one of the safest surgical procedures. However\, i
t necessitates careful dissection of the thyroid while avoiding injury of
vital structures such as the parathyroid and its vasculature. Accidental e
xcision or damage to the parathyroid or its vasculature could lead to tran
sient or permanent hypocalcemia. Until recently\, surgeons identify parath
yroid and confirm its viability using visual examination which is highly s
ubjective. We have demonstrated that near infra-red autofluorescence (NIRA
 F) of the parathyroid can be used for its real-time identification and las
er speckle contract imaging can be used to identify its viability. Here\,
I will present the translation of these technologies into clinical practic
e and the extension of its use for other endocrine surgeries.
