SUMMARY:ICFO | MELIKE LAKADAMYALI
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PROFILE:&nbsp\;\nThe overarching goal of the Lakadamyali lab is
to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate sub-cellular organiz
ation and the significance of this organization on cell function. Cells ar
 e highly compartmentalized: the sub-cellular positioning of organelles\, n
ucleic acids and proteins are spatially and temporally coordinated to ensu
re that biochemical reactions take place at the right place and time. Laka
damyali lab&rsquo\;s research program has three major focus areas that see
k to advance our understanding of sub-cellular organization. In the contex
t of the cytosol\, we seek to determine how the microtubule cytoskeleton a
nd motors regulate the transport and positioning of organelles within the
cytoplasm and the functional consequences of disrupting proper organelle o
rganization. In addition\, we are interested in understanding how the mole
cular identity of organelles is linked to their spatial positioning and fu
nction. In the context of the nucleus\, we seek to understand how the spat
ial organization of chromatin regulates gene activity in health and diseas
 e. To address these key biological questions\, the Lakadamyali lab takes a
n innovative approach of combining cell biological tools with advanced and
highly quantitative microscopy tools including single-molecule tracking a
nd super-resolution microscopy.\nDr. Lakadamyali received several honors i
ncluding the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Young Investig
 ator award\, ERC-Starting grant\, Technical University of Munich-Institute
for Advanced Study Hans Fischer Fellowship and the Linda Pechenik Montagu
e Investigator award. Her research has been funded by the ERC\, NIH and NS
 F.\n&nbsp\;
