 niversity$$Alexander Fetter is Professor Emeritus of Physics and Applied P
 hysics at Stanford University. His current problems of interest include vo
 rtex dynamics on curved surfaces and in trapped coherently coupled Bose-Ei
 nstein condensates.\nFetter graduated with a B.A. from Williams College in
  1958\, where he was valedictorian. He was also a Rhodes Scholar at Ballio
 l College of Oxford University\, and then went on to receive a PhD in Phys
 ics at Harvard University in 1963. He spent two years at the University of
  California\, Berkeley as a Miller Postdoctoral fellow.  In 1965\, he join
 ed the faculty at Stanford University\, and has been there since. He serve
 d as chair of the Physics Department from 1985 to 1990.\nFetter is a fello
 w of the American Physical Society and American Association for the Advanc
 ement of Science. He served as the director of the Hansen Experimental Phy
 sics Laboratory and the Geballe Laboratory for Advanced Materials.  During
  his career at Stanford\, he   received three awards for teaching\, culmin
 ating in the Stanford Dean’s Award for Lifetime Achievements in Teaching
  (2008).\n
