Professor of Chemistry\, Physics and Molecular and Cell Biology\, The Ray
mond and Beverly Sackler Professor in Biophysics\, University of Californi
a\, Berkeley\n$$\nCarlos Bustamante is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (
HHMI) investigator and professor of molecular and cell biology\, physics\,
and chemistry at the University of California\, Berkeley\, a position he
has held since 1998. He uses novel methods of single-molecule visualizatio
n\, such as scanning force microscopy\, to study the structure and functio
n of nucleoprotein assemblies. His laboratory is developing methods of sin
gle-molecule manipulation\, such as optical tweezers\, to characterize the
elasticity of DNA\, to induce the mechanical unfolding of individual prot
ein molecules\, and to investigate the machine-like behavior of molecular
 motors.
